Poatina Arts

This four-week residency is offered in partnership with Poatina Arts.

  • This residency is $5,000 for one artist, or $8,000 for two artists.
  • Funding must be used to cover the residency fee of $500 per week.

This residency is located in Poatina Village, a 45-minute drive from Launceston, or a 2-hour drive from Hobart.

Poatina Village is a 1950s village originally built by Hydro on a north-facing spur of the Great Western Tiers, between Northern Midlands farms and a highland World Heritage Conservation Area.

Poatina Arts is a collective of artists and artist-run initiatives operating within Poatina village. Its vision is to be a hive of inspired activity where people can come alive.

Poatina is an inclusive, close-knit collaborative community of just over 100 people, with a number of community members practicing across a range of arts disciplines. The community is committed to creativity, learning and service, and is informed by Christian values.

Potential opportunities available through this residency include use of the Poatina Tree Art Gallery for a public exhibition during or after the residency.

Access to Wi-Fi is provided in the accommodation and may also be accessed in various locations within the village.

Access and transport

There is no public transport servicing the village. It is strongly recommended that artists provide their own vehicle for this residency.

Services available at Poatina include a general store, post office, service station, gift shop and cafe, with limited opening times. The nearest large supermarket is located at Longford, a 30-minute drive away.

A network of bushwalking tracks surround Poatina and a golf course is also available.

True to the era, only some facilities have good disability access, however the site hosts would seek to find the best fit for accommodation and workspace.

More information

Due to the nature of the Poatina community, applicants will need to obtain a Working with Vulnerable People registration.

Details of the residency site are available at: http://poatinaarts.org.au and Poatina village is open to visitors year-round.
