Glover Country

This residency at the historic Patterdale homestead is offered in partnership with Carol and Rodney Westmore.

  • This residency is $5,000 for one artist, or $8,000 for two artists.
  • Funding must be used to cover the accommodation fee of $500 per week.

John Glover is often referred to as the father of Australian landscape painting. Born in England, he arrived in Van Diemen’s Land in 1831 where he lived up until his death in 1849.

Glover was enthusiastic about the light and flora of Tasmania, particularly on his property at Patterdale, and at the Nile River at Deddington, reflected in his work.

Residency facilities and accommodation

This residency offers contemporary accommodation in Glover’s homestead, including:

  • a modern kitchen
  • full bathroom facilities
  • a separate workspace, the ‘Exhibition Room’, is available adjacent to the house.

Applicants will need to provide their own food and personal items.

Mobile phone reception is limited.

Access and transport

It is strongly recommended that artists provide their own car for this residency.

The historic township of Evandale is approximately a 20-minute drive, and Longford approximately 30-minute drive. Launceston is 45-minutes away and the Launceston Airport is a 30-minute drive.

The nearest supermarket and service station are located at Longford.

There is no public transport servicing this site.

Disability access is limited, with steep stairs accessing the on-site accommodation.
