This residency is offered in partnership with all that we are.

  • This residency is $5,000 for one artist or $8,000 for two artists (The Shaper Studio is a one-bedroom accommodation, so couples are recommended).
  • Grant funds must be used to cover the accommodation fee of $525 per week for one artist.

all that we are is an immersive residency project run by Simon Spain and Victoria Ryle from their property overlooking Pipe Clay Lagoon near Clifton Beach.

all that we are supports community-engaged practice, particularly intergenerational projects. The residency would be suitable for artists with practices focused on community-engagement. The owners are experienced in community-engaged arts practice and are keen to support opportunities for artists interested in developing their reflective practice.

Key information

  • This residency is four weeks long in total at The Shaper Studio at all that we are in Sandford on the South Arm Peninsula.
  • Residencies are available in late 2023 and throughout 2024.
  • All artforms will be considered for this residency.
  • Other artists may be in residence at the same time.
  • Availability for the space can be limited so if successful, please contact the site manager as soon as possible.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the site manager for more information before commencing their application, at least two weeks before the closing date.

Residency facilities and accommodation

Accommodation is a completely independent 72sqm space, with:

  • one bedroom (double bed),
  • a well-lit studio space (suitable for painting),
  • kitchen,
  • living room,
  • composting toilet with specially designed semi-outdoor shower,
  • wood-burning heater and outdoor deck,
  • shared laundry and access to the main house.

Applicants must provide their own food and personal items.

The Shaper Studio has a double bedroom and partners are welcome to stay while you are in-residence (for a small fee) in discussion with the hosts.

This residency is dog-friendly.

The property is set in five acres of surrounding bushland.

The residency owners will also be on-site and available for mentoring, coaching, or to share ideas, for those interested, and will invite resident artists to a local community meal hosted during the residency.

Technology

Access to Wi-Fi is included as part of the residency, but currently limited in The Shaper Studio.

Access and transport

It is strongly recommended that artists provide their own car for this residency.

The nearest shopping is six (6) kilometres away in Lauderdale.

The city of Hobart is 25-minutes drive. Public transport services run daily between Sandford and Hobart. The surrounding area is well-suited to exploring on foot or by bike.

Artists living with disability should contact the residency site manager to confirm whether this residency would be suitable before applying.
