The Tasmanian Government has assumed a caretaker role ahead of the election for the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It is important during this time that Tasmanian Government resources are not used to communicate political material. As such, no political or election material will be placed on this site.

Tasmanian Government Art Site Scheme

The Tasmanian Government Art Site Scheme is the government's public art program.

Two per cent of the capital works estimate for all new Tasmanian government buildings and refurbishments over $250,000 is allocated for the purchase and commissioning of artworks. The artwork budget for each project is capped at $80,000.

Since its launch in 1979, the Scheme has managed over 660 commissions creating more than 1,900 artworks located across the state, resulting in a contemporary state public art collection that includes work from a wide range of disciplines.

The Scheme is a major source of government investment in the visual arts in Tasmania. This investment also flows through to the wider community, not only in the social, educational and health outcomes known to derive from public art, but to local suppliers as artists procure services and materials for the creation of artworks.

Arts Tasmania works together with partner agencies to develop an artist brief which meets the needs of building users and the objectives of the scheme.

Commission opportunities are advertised via our Newsletter and the open commissions section on our website.
