Arts Tasmania

Education Residencies

This program is offered in partnership with the Tasmanian Government’s Department for Education, Children and Young People.

It provides opportunities for:

  • Tasmanian artists to focus on their practice in an educational environment
  • young people and their families to engage with the arts
  • teachers to be introduced to new ideas and approaches.

Artists are not expected or required to work on specific projects for the school or teach students directly.

    As the applicant, you must be:

    • an individual artist who has lived in Tasmania for six of the last 12 months.

    You must also:

    • be registered to work with vulnerable people (it is the responsibility of the artist to cover any costs associated with this registration - for more information go to: Work with Vulnerable People
    • comply with the Australia Council for the Arts’ Protocols for Working with Children in Art (www.australiacouncil.gov.au/funding/children-in-art-protocols) as well as any relevant laws as they exist in the State of Tasmania
    • have Public Liability Insurance Cover for a minimum of $10 million (evidence of insurance cover will need to be provided with the signed funding agreement).

    You must also meet our general eligibility requirements.

    How much can I apply for?

    $10,000 is available for each residency.

    This must cover all artist fees and other residency costs (including materials).

    When applying, artists must select:

    • a preferred residency type
    • a preferred residency region.

    Artists may be recommended for a residency in another region.

    If an artist is recommended for a residency outside of the region they live in, they will also receive:

    • a contribution towards living costs, and
    • accommodation provided by the school where practicable.

    You cannot use grant funds to purchase equipment.

    Applications will be assessed by a multi-artform panel using the criteria of:

    • Why is the activity important?
    • Are the people involved experienced, or show the potential to develop and grow?

    • How does the proposed activity benefit the applicant, the artist, or the community?

    Residencies are available across Tasmania. Schools are selected in discussion with the Department for Education, Children and Young People, and matched to the artists requirements and preferred region (where possible).

    There are eight $10,000 residencies available in this round, with two residencies supported by the Department for Education, Children and Young People.

    These residencies support Aboriginal artists to work in primary or secondary schools with a higher proportion of Aboriginal students.
