Interest free loans for art lovers

In an Australian first, potential art buyers will be able to acquire original Tasmanian pieces using interest free loans under the COLLECT Art Purchase Scheme.

The Minister for the Arts, Michelle O'Byrne, today launched the scheme, which will see eleven commercial galleries across the State offering the 12 month interest free loans.

"I am thrilled that we are leading the country with this opportunity to encourage and enable people to buy Tasmanian artworks," Ms O'Byrne said.

"We have such a wealth of highly creative and successful artists in this state. It is important that their work is seen not just locally, but nationally as well."

Tasmanian and interstate residents can access the loans, but artworks can only be purchased through approved participating galleries.

"We have formed a partnership with some of the leading commercial galleries from across the state to ensure that the works people buy are of a clear professional standard," said Ms O'Byrne.

"I encourage everyone to take advantage of Scheme and purchase a wonderful Tasmanian work of art to treasure"

Mark Bishop, Director of Stanley Artworks, said it will help to boost sales during a difficult economic climate.

"There is no more important time in the history of selling art for the introduction of this scheme," said Mr Bishop.

The scheme is based on similar successful schemes in the UK, France and the Netherlands and can be used to purchase original Tasmanian paintings, photographs, sculptures, furniture, jewellery, drawings, glasswork, textiles, metalwork, ceramics and new media. Commissioned works are also eligible.

The scheme applies to Tasmanian artworks valued from $400 to a maximum $10,000.

Loan applications for amounts between $750 and $7,500 can be lodged online.
