31/01/2012 - Designer Shares His Vision
Guided by touch, a tactile depth gauge, and a talking tape measure Duncan Meerding has established himself as one of Tasmania’s successful emerging furniture designer/makers. In 2005 at age 18, Duncan was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition that left him legally blind within 12 months. He now has less than 5 per cent vision in the peripheral field in both eyes. For the 25 year old, Duncan’s design practice is a form of artistic expression that depicts how he now sees the world: composed of minimalist objects and flowing lines.

Local Tasmanian artist Jeanette James was interviewed about her practice and her work included in Museums & Galleries NSW's touring exhibition, Excessory: Contemporary Australian Jewellery.
Excessory brings together the work of six contemporary Australian jewellery artists who challenge traditional notions of preciousness through the transformation of commonplace, low-value and found materials into jewellery objects.
