The Tasmanian Government has assumed a caretaker role ahead of the election for the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It is important during this time that Tasmanian Government resources are not used to communicate political material. As such, no political or election material will be placed on this site.

Arts Tasmania manages public art commissions for the Tasmanian government through the Tasmanian Government Art Site Scheme.

We can also assist clients in the private, community, local and federal government sectors to develop and manage public art or design commissions specific through our Corporate Art Scheme.

What is public art?

We use 'public art' to mean artworks that are commissioned or purchased by government on behalf of the public and are displayed in public buildings or spaces.

Public art can include artwork from a wide range of disciplines, such as prints and painting, 2D wall-based artwork, outdoor 3D sculptures and installations, textile works, ceramics, lighting, and time-based media.

Our public art program includes the Tasmanian Government Art Site Scheme and the Corporate Art Scheme.

How are artworks selected?

Arts Tasmania works with its partner agencies to create an artist's brief. The brief includes information about what kind of artwork is being commissioned, the artwork budget, key dates and any special requirements. We let people know about commission opportunities through a range of channels, including our website and e-newsletter.

A selection panel assesses applications for each commission against the selection criteria included in the brief. The panel generally includes building user representatives, the capital works project manager, and an Arts Tasmania representative.

The panel is impartial and follows Arts Tasmania's requirements around conflict of interest and confidentiality. We notify all applicants in writing as soon as possible after the decision is made.
