Tasmanian Residencies

The Tasmanian Residencies program supports Tasmanian artists to undertake residencies at wilderness, historical and cultural locations across Tasmania.

This program provides Tasmanian artists with a variety of opportunities to experience new environments, to reflect or spend focused time exploring ideas or working in different cultural settings.

These residencies are offered in partnership with the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service and historic sites.

Notification for each round will occur eight weeks after the closing date.

What locations are available?

Who can apply?

  • Individual artists based in Tasmania.
  • Partnerships, collaborations and other unincorporated groups with at least one Tasmanian member. Interstate or international artists may be included as part of a collaborative project but will not be eligible for Arts Tasmania funding.

What can I apply for?

The Tasmanian Residencies program provides assistance towards accommodation expenses and other costs that may be associated with your residency, such as:

  • Travel expenses
  • Living expenses
  • Materials

You cannot apply for national or international residency opportunities under this program.

You cannot apply activities that do not involve professional artists or arts workers, do not have a clearly defined arts component or that have already taken place.

How many times a year can I apply?

There are two Tasmanian Residencies rounds a year.

You may only submit one Tasmanian Residencies application per calendar year as a solo artist.

Arts Tasmania accept applications from groups which include solo artists that may have applied in the same funding round.

How much can I apply for?

Funding for residencies is available as a set amount per week. See who can apply to confirm the eligibility for the collaborating artist.

Some locations offer the option to divide a residency across two stages. You will need to confirm these arrangement with the site manager and include your proposed residency structure with approximate dates in your site manager's confirmation letter.

You are strongly advised to discuss your proposal with the Professional Development Officer, Wendy Morrow, prior to submitting an application.

What criteria will my application be assessed under?

Your application will be assessed against the criteria of quality and reach.

Quality (80 per cent weighting)

The panel will consider factors including:

  • strength of the artistic concept and artistic practice
  • creativity – imagination, originality
  • progression – fresh artistic approaches, experimentation and creative challenge
  • currency – timeliness in career, relevance to career development, potential for growth in practice
  • capacity – calibre of personnel, resource and financial management, planning

Reach (20 per cent weighting)

The panel will consider factors including:

  • What are the outcomes of the project?
  • Audience/market – numbers, marketing strategy, diversity and connection
  • Engagement – participation, access, involvement of the public and/or specific audiences or market sectors

Who will assess my application?

Applications will be assessed by a multi-artform panel.

Parks and Wildlife Service management is consulted regarding applications to the parks and wildlife locations.

Site managers are consulted regarding applications to the historic and cultural residency locations.

What do I submit in my application?

All applications must include:

  • A letter or e-mail of confirmation from the residency site manager or administrator
  • A completed budget using the budget section of the application form
  • A brief CV or biography for each artist involved in your residency
  • A maximum of five items of artistic support material.

Please note that excess support material will not be accepted. All attachments should be listed on the support material cover page and each attachment should be clearly labelled.

How do I submit my application?

Your application form must be completed online before the round closing date.

Relevant supporting documents should be submitted as attachments to or links in your online application form.

Material received after the closing date will not be considered.
