Types of assistance

Grants

Grants are a form of financial assistance for a defined project or program of activities. Grants are non-repayable provided the project proceeds as approved. A range of grant opportunities are available through Arts Tasmania at different times throughout the year. These are described in the next section. It is important to check that you are applying to the correct funding round and that you have your application ready to submit by the correct closing date because most of our funding opportunities are available only once a year.

In most cases grants cannot be requested for items of a capital nature, such as the purchase of assets. The exceptions to this are the infrastructure fund and start-up grants which are available under the assistance to individuals and assistance to organisations programs.

Application tool kits for each grant round are released two months before the relevant closing date. These are an essential part of the application process and provide specific information for each round, including eligibility requirements, assessment criteria and planning and budgeting templates that will guide you through the application process.

Planning and budgeting templates are related to the Australia Council's Business Planning Framework. Using these templates should help you express your project in a way that will address the selection criteria.

Funds for successful grant applications are not paid out in full. 90 per cent is paid on receipt of all necessary paperwork, the final 10 per cent after the activity has been undertaken and a satisfactory acquittal submitted.

If you are still uncertain about any of these details after reading the program descriptions, call a Program Officer at Arts Tasmania on 1800 247 308.

Loans

Arts Tasmania and arts@work offer two loan programs. Low-interest loans are available for Tasmanian artists and arts organisations. The COLLECT art purchase scheme is also available for the purchase of Tasmanian art from participating galleries (conditions apply).

For more information about low-interest loans visit the loans page or click here.

Guarantee against loss

A guarantee against loss (GAL) is available to organisations for a wide range of professional arts events that may involve an element of financial risk relating to ticket income. A GAL provides security by underwriting a reasonable short-fall.

Applicants should supply a budget that shows planned income and expenditure for the event. The GAL sought should be the difference between the estimated worst-case income and estimated expenditure. The amount paid out, if any, will be the deficit - the difference between the actual expenditure and the actual income - up to the approved amount. Verification of actual income and expenditure will be required.
