Paintings and works on paper by Alan Young
I am driven to paint by my everyday experiences and observations. That is basically what I experience as an artist living in contemporary Australian society. I am not trying to change the world. I am just reacting to what I see and how it influences and affects me and others around me. Sometimes, I capture moments and sometimes I tell stories. At the heart of my painting is a commitment to developing my own symbolic language. This may manifest itself in different ways through a combination of colour, form, text and placement but always it is there. I have always had a particular interest in exploring the relationship between people, place and space.
I have just moved into North Hobart and have been drawing constantly to document my response to my new location. I have been focusing on groups of characters and how they interact with each other. My mural combines text, landscape and figurative elements.
