Two dimensional mixed media works by Saria Phillips
Midlands experiments with sequential imagery to present micro-narratives about everyday life. This body of images map an emotional journey, using landscape to frame and add milieu to the story being told.
The naïve style makes reference to comic genres and story books, reflecting on my early childhood when I ‘read’ stories using the pictures to shape the narrative instead of the text. A major theme influencing these works is physical and symbolic denial. Denial is explored through notions of place and a preoccupation with belonging. The stories displayed have a bittersweet flavour. There is pain but there is healing too - transitioning to a place of self-acceptance.
